Zoo Day

monkey in a cage and tortoises in their enclosure. heart stickers and a zoo sign.
Monkeys are very exciting to watch, but seeing a tortoise munch on a salad is pretty cool too!!

A big group of kids, a couple of moms who enjoy hanging out together and the whole zoo to explore – fun for everyone!! My friend K and I took the kids on a couple of adventures over this break and we had it down to a science.  We’d pack lunch, snacks, drinks and spend the entire day letting the kids tire themselves out!

On Monday, we went to the Bronx Zoo with friends. We saw lots of animals. The dinosaur safari was my favorite part! Photos of the animals, the kids in the group have their faces covered with zoo animal stickers.
Another great day at the zoo for the Mauro boys and their pals!

Guess What?

All this fun has educational benefits too! The zoo is a wonderful learning experience for kids. There is nothing that can replace actually seeing animals for yourself, hearing the sounds they make, seeing them eat and play and interact with each other.

For example, I can read a book to learn about animals that live in the rain forest. It is an entirely different experience to step inside the Gorilla Congo. You feel the hot, humid air. You are immersed in the dense vegetation in every shade of green.  The sounds of the rainforest (some of which are played over speakers) surround you. It is a full sensory immersion into a different world.  How cool is that?

In addition, kids who learn about animals and their habitats have a better understanding of the Earth itself and why we have to be good stewards, taking care of nature so it is preserved for generations to come.

Too Pricey?

The Bronx Zoo offers a free day each week for individuals, families and groups who cannot afford admission.  Call your closest zoo to see if they have a free day.  Additionally, your local library may have zoo passes that you can ‘check out’ for the day. If you plan to use them over school break, reserve them early.
