White Blanket

This post is a bit of a mish-mash of a few different ideas.

First, this is our downtime before the first day of school. This journal entry perfectly encapsulates how we’d usually spend the last day of summer.  Either outside by the pool or inside chilling out, we’d relax and get ourselves organized for the school year.  It gave me time to check that they had all the school supplies on their lists, make sure everything was labeled and catch my breath after the summer madness.

Secondly, Will is prominently featured in today’s entry.  I thought it was important for the kids in Mikey’s Fourth Grade class to know that he had a cool big brother in the Sixth Grade! That’s in the middle school in our town so it was a big deal.

But more than that, using the journal to share that Mikey is loved helps the kids to see him as a whole person.  You’re less likely to mock someone when you know their family. The journal helped his classmates get to know us without us being present in school.  It showed that Mikey was important to us.

Finally, that white blanket.  Mikey was obsessed with this duvet insert. It could never have a cover because Mikey would take it off.  He wanted the pure, unadulterated white blanket. It was a great source of comfort to him for many years.  Now we have shifted to a simple navy blue comforter for Mikey’s bed and he has handled the change like a champ!

How was that for a mess of different topics?  That’s how it goes.  Every day will be a jumble of different goals, activities and emotions – just do your best to keep all the balls in the air and if one drops, get to it when you can.
