Watercolors
I promise to share the details of how Mikey uses watercolors, but I need you to take quick moment and look at the joy on his face in these photos. He beams happiness! It lights up every room he is in and makes people adore him. It’s a beautiful thing.
Mikey does not use watercolors to paint pictures of specific objects or scenes. All of his watercolors are abstract and he just uses the paints to blend the colors together. By the time he is finished, he has filled most or all of the page and the results are gorgeous.
He likes someone to be with him while he paints and sometimes he waits for an adult to select a color, but often, he just likes to hear what a beautiful job he is doing. Don’t we all?

Erica Mauro is a mom to two teenage boys, Will who is neurotypical and Michael with Autism and cognitive delays. She holds a BA in Psychology from Colgate University and a Masters of Psychology in Education from Columbia Teacher’s College. Before staying home with her children, she worked as an elementary school teacher. For five years, she served on the Board of Directors of the Molly Ann Tango Memorial Foundation, a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of children with special needs. In partnership with her husband Dave, she aspires to parent by using daily life as an opportunity for therapeutic intervention, seizing on real experiences as opportunities to build skills and strategies for Michael in a joyful, loving home environment. On the tougher early days, she just tried to get everyone safely to bedtime and start fresh in the morning. *wink*
