The Seasons

The seasons give a predictable rhythm to our lives. This provides comfort to even the most adventurous of kids, but for our special kiddos, it is even more important.  They love routine and as they grow and learn, they come to understand the different feel of each season.

Emphasize the Season

Whether it is with your seasonal decorations, a flag near your front porch, or the coloring pages you give your child, visual cues signal the season and reinforce learning. In addition, doing seasonal activities is a great way to play up the fact that the seasons keep repeating year after year. Maybe your family already has some traditions tied to the seasons.

Books

We read seasonal books often. In fact, for the first decade of my kids’ lives, the seasonal or holiday related children’s books stayed in the bin with that month’s decorations.  Here is an example of one book we loved.

Talk About It

Talk about the crisp fall air, the leaves changing color and the Halloween decorations going up in the neighborhood.

Do Some Stuff

Go apple picking, do a trunk-or-treat event or go to a costume party. Go on a walk and crunch the leaves under your feet. In whatever ways work for your, embrace the Fall!
