The Princess Bride

Photos from the movie The Princess Bride including a name tag that says "Hello, my name is" and written is is "Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
Despite how it may appear, this movie is actually very family friendly. Highly recommend!

It is one of my favorite movies of all time, but that’s not why the Princess Bride is the topic of my Thursday Thoughts. On Facebook, ABA Inside Track recently posted this:

1. Polite greeting (hello) 2. name (my name is Inigo Montoya) 3. Relevant personal link (you killed my father). 4. manage expectations (prepare to die)
Break the skill down to help your child manage each step.

Just brilliant! I love this!

When we teach conversation to our kids with autism, it can help them to have a list of things to include.  For example, a typical greeting might be. “(1)Hi! (2)I’m Mikey. (3)I’m in your class this year. (4) I have Autism so sometimes conversations are tricky for me.”

By managing expectations, our kids can help their conversation partner to be more aware and more understanding.

Don’t worry if your child can’t do all (or any) of this. Remember, they can’t do it YET.

Mikey can do the first two so far and we’ll keep working towards more verbal expression each year.
