The Muppets
The Muppets are a national treasure! Our generation watched The Muppet Show on TV each week and experienced the first Muppet movies in theaters when we were young. Now, our kids can stream all things Muppet on their tablets. You know by now, I love traditions. I love things that link one generation to the next and that probably explains why we went to this movie…mom may have been the driving force behind this outing.
What’s So Great About The Muppets?
So glad you asked! I think every child should experience the sarcasm and kid-friendly dark humor of Waldorf and Statler. The Muppet Show was a kid show with built-in hecklers! Brilliant! Life isn’t all sunshine and roses…we may as well get used to the curmudgeons because they’re out there and our kids will meet them. Best they learn to respond with a little giggle rather than offended outrage.
If that’s not persuading you, how about The Muppet Christmas Carol? In this masterpiece, Michael Cain gives an Oscar-worthy performance as Ebenezer Scrooge surrounded by muppets…do you need to read that again? He does not mail it in…this is seriously good acting and I watch it every year! In fairness, I also watch the entire Santa Clause series every year because I just love Christmas.
On the topic of Christmas, John Denver and The Muppets: A Christmas Together is one of my favorites! My Nana bought it for me on a record (which I first listened to in her dining room sideboard/record player – yikes, I’m old). This album has something for everyone: a folk music legend, a Miss Piggy solo, an Animal rendition of Little St. Nick and even Silent Night in its original German…more than you thought? Yup!
Finally, and most famously, let’s not forget that Sesame Street is full of Muppets…the greatest kids show of all time. I rest my case.
