The Helpers
Over the course of baseball season, the buddies rotated through and helped different kids. Michael finally got a turn to have K. She was a gem! This kid was one in a million. Not only did she reach out to all the special needs kids and volunteer to be a buddy for the challenger team! She also singlehandedly established an alternative to unified sports at our local high school. Because of her efforts, kids could choose between unified sports and unified drama. They put on a play! Since Mikey was a unified sports kid, he attended the play and cheered for his classmates.
Kids like K, people like K make the world a better place. She went on to study speech and language pathology, and I can confidently say that she will touch the lives of many more special people throughout her life!
The world is a better place because of people like K!!

Erica Mauro is a mom to two teenage boys, Will who is neurotypical and Michael with Autism and cognitive delays. She holds a BA in Psychology from Colgate University and a Masters of Psychology in Education from Columbia Teacher’s College. Before staying home with her children, she worked as an elementary school teacher. For five years, she served on the Board of Directors of the Molly Ann Tango Memorial Foundation, a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of children with special needs. In partnership with her husband Dave, she aspires to parent by using daily life as an opportunity for therapeutic intervention, seizing on real experiences as opportunities to build skills and strategies for Michael in a joyful, loving home environment. On the tougher early days, she just tried to get everyone safely to bedtime and start fresh in the morning. *wink*
