The Bookfair
The Scholastic Bookfair has been around since before I started elementary school, and it remains a tradition in many schools since it raises funds and helps stock the school library.
If you know your kiddo will need some extra help choosing books, it might make sense to pick them up from school one day and go to the book fair together. Mikey chose a scratch-off workbook and a pen/puppet. The pen/puppet was perfect to practice our conversations in a silly way. With Will, I would often encourage him to get some real reading books, but I also let him choose some fun things.

Honestly, the fun things were my favorite part when I was a kid. My parents often took me to the library and the bookstore, so the gimmicky toys were the real draw for me. For Will, the “Who Would Win” books were always a favorite, as were any books about sea life (preferably ginormous terrifying sea creatures). My thought is that all reading is good reading since it helps our kids develop their interests and practice their decoding skills.
The big take-away is that the bookfair is a community event at school and I always wanted my kids to participate!
