Summer Reading Chart

Mikey loved to read, but he had outgrown the town summer reading program geared towards the elementary school and the middle school program was a bit out of reach for him.

journal entry: I started my summer reading. Photo of Mikey looking at his summer reading chart and holding up a small printed and stapled book called The Wheel.

This chart was more to motivate me than Mikey.  He enjoyed it and he loves getting praise and positive feedback! But, in truth, I wanted to motivate myself to keep finding great books for Mikey to read. I felt it was very important to keep supporting him in developing this vital skill.

When your child’s literacy skills are developing, the books are often very short. That means it takes a lot of effort on the parents’ part to keep new and interesting books in the house.  I made weekly trips to the library with and without the boys to make sure there were plenty of choices.

I also asked Mikey’s school to send home any books he read at school so he could practice reading them again at home. The book he is holding is one they printed at school from an online reading program they were using with him.
