Snapping Turtle

stylized photo of a snapping turtle.

Remember when the snapping turtle befriended Mikey at the aquarium?  It was from opposite sides of the aquarium glass, but still…so crazy!

Well, we have snapping turtles in the pond near our house, and they need a safe place on land to nest and lay their eggs. Several years since we’ve lived here, we’ve gotten to watch through our windows as a snapping turtle made her nest and laid her eggs. It is very cool!

journal entry from June 2: "This snapping turtle was on my driveway!" photo of a large snapping turtle crossing our driveway.

If you see a snapping turtle on your property, just let it be.  They can get lost if people move them from place to place.  Also, once the eggs hatch, be on the lookout for the tiny turtles as they head back to their pond.  In our town, we even have signs…

Yellow diamond-shaped road sign with TURTLE XING printed on it along with a mom turtle and a baby turtle.

We’re not messing around!
