Part 2

close-up, stylized photo of the bottom of the journal page: a photo of Mikey watching football and a photo of Mikey swinging, flanking two artistic pumpkins.

The best weekend, part 2…also brought to you by simple, inexpensive at-home activities. I know the start of your parenting journey can feel pressure-filled, especially when it comes with a big diagnosis, but all kids are kids first.

All kids are kids first.

The diagnosis is extra. It means they may need more from you, but you can take comfort in the fact that simple pleasures may still win the day.

page 2 of the journal entry - 6 captioned photos: cuddling with dad on the couch, cuddling with Ruby on the couch, watching football, swinging on the swings, reading magazines and wrestling with Will

If you have time today, do one simple thing with your kiddo.  You may be surprised how much it means to them.

About the Author

Erica Mauro is a mom to two teenage boys, Will who is neurotypical and Michael with Autism and cognitive delays. She holds a BA in Psychology from Colgate University and a Masters of Psychology in Education from Columbia Teacher’s College. Before staying home with her children, she worked as an elementary school teacher. In partnership with her husband Dave, she aspires to parent by using daily life as an opportunity for therapeutic intervention, seizing on real experiences as opportunities to build skills and strategies for Michael in a joyful, loving home environment. On the tougher early days, she just tried to get everyone safely to bedtime and start fresh in the morning. *wink* 😉
