Opt In

Stylized photos of Mikey with friends, all of their faces obscured with smiling jack-o-lanterns.
Look at all those smiling faces! LOL

Put on by our community center, trunk-or-treat was a popular event with the elementary school kids.  Of course, we decorated a trunk, but more importantly, we opted Mikey in to celebrate Halloween with his pals.

journal entry from October 27, 2014. "I loved trunk-or-treat! Photos of Mikey with friends in costumes, near some of the trunks and decorations at our community center.
Trunkin’ and treatin’ as one does.

And, he loved it! He caught up with friends and ate way too much candy.  It was a great afternoon.

Escape Plan

If you’re doing this for the first time, you may want to skip decorating a trunk. If your child needs to leave quickly, you’ll want your car parked away from the action to give them a safe space. Or, if you can share duties with another family, you can decorate one car and keep the other parked in a get-away spot.

If you did volunteer to decorate a trunk, remember that your child’s car seat is still a safe space which can be used if all else fails. Also, it probably wouldn’t hurt to throw some beach chairs in the car.  It ends up being a long time on your feet for the candy dispensing adult who stays with the car.

However you do it, think it through so you can relax and enjoy the event. Your kiddo will be calmer if you are calmer (and you can’t fake it with kids – they always know).
