My Swing Set

My Swing Set in bold red letters, a bright yellow sun and two photos of Michael: one on the slide and one on the swings.
Just sliding and swinging and climbing and thriving.

Michael loved this swing set! Anything your child enjoys can be a great vehicle for eliciting language.  This journal entry is a perfect example.

Mikey's journal entry from 9/18/13. I played outside. 3 photos of Michael on our backyard play set. I climbed up, went down the slide and went on the swings. It was sunny.
Playing outside and writing about the fun!

I showed Mikey the photo on the right. I asked, “Where are you?” He answered, “outside.” I wrote the sentence “I played outside.” And Mikey copied it down.

Still looking at the first picture “What are you doing?” His answer, “Climbing.” Then I helped by writing the sentence “I climbed up” and Mikey copied it down. And so on.

When you see these longer journal entries, they are products of conversations between the two of us. Me asking questions and Michael answering me.  Then putting those into sentence form that was in the past tense.

Any commas or apostrophes in Mikey’s journal (all throughout his years of journaling) are the product of my help.  He automatically puts a period at the end of his thoughts independently.

This process of journaling together has been more rewarding than I could have imagined. I’m so glad I get to share it with you all.

One Parting Message

I look at these photos and feel the need to document the following fact:

I just adore this kid (period).
