Monopoly

'She LOVES games!' monopoly board and Mr. Monopoly alongside a shot of Mimi, the boys and our golden retriever around the board game.
It wouldn't be a Mimi visit without lots of games!

Monopoly is one of our family’s favorite games.  I have loved it since I was a kid and my mom loved to play Monopoly with our kids.  In fact, one year, she got the boys a Mr. Monopoly ornament for the Christmas tree.

journal entry from December 15, 2014. "My Mimi is visiting. She LOVES games! In Monopoly, I got to be the car! mid-game photo and the board with the car on the Pennsylvania Railroad spot.
Doesn’t it look like our dog Ruby is playing too!

When a game like this was too tricky for Mikey to play on his own, I offered to be his teammate.  He could roll the dice and move the car around the board.  Then I could help with any high powered real estate moves we needed to make to secure our fortune.  Win-Win.

Benefits of Board Games

I’m a huge fan of board games for kids.  First, it’s a low-tech activity.  For me, that’s probably enough of a reason to embrace board games.  But, there are so many other benefits.  They teach simple addition, turn-taking, paying attention, and learning to win and lose kindly. They help with critical thinking skills and strategizing as well, but my most favorite thing about board games is that they are a group activity. Togetherness is such a beautiful thing.
