Mom’s Helper

a box of Jiffy corn muffin mix and a smiling Mikey with the mixer in the background.
Snap a quick photo before we start because this whole experience is going to be over pretty quickly.

This boxed corn muffin mix is a perfect cooking activity to do with kids! First, it has about three steps before you put the oven.  Second, they come out looking and tasting the same every time (a huge bonus for the non-adventurous eaters among us). Third, they can be breakfast on their own or they can go along side something like chili for dinner. Finally, it takes about 5 minutes to prep them, even if you’re going slowly.

Mikey's journal entry from January 26, 2014
The smile of a happy helper!

They’re so simple yet look at the pride on Mikey’s face! His smile is a clear reminder that being helpful and spending your time doing something useful is fulfilling for all of us. Our brothers, friends and cousins with special needs are no different. They are motivated by purposeful work.

If you’re looking for other ways to get your child or children involved in the kitchen, these posts may interest you.

About the Author

Erica Mauro is a mom to two teenage boys, Will who is neurotypical and Michael with Autism and cognitive delays. She holds a BA in Psychology from Colgate University and a Masters of Psychology in Education from Columbia Teacher’s College. For five years, she served on the Board of Directors of the Molly Ann Tango Memorial Foundation, a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of children with special needs. In partnership with her husband Dave, she aspires to parent by using daily life as an opportunity for therapeutic intervention, seizing on real experiences as opportunities to build skills and strategies for Michael in a joyful, loving home environment. On the tougher early days, she just tried to get everyone safely to bedtime and start fresh in the morning. *wink* 😉
