Mikey’s First Hockey Game

first hockey game! stylized photo of the Zamboni and Mikey, will and Dave smiling in their seats. Mikey holding a box of nerds.
Dave won over the whole family with this day trip. Now, we wouldn't miss a game!

Seriously, how fun is it to have Mikey’s first hockey game captured in his journal?!? Watching hockey has become one of his favorite hobbies and we get to look back on the first time he saw the game live.

journal entry from march 2. "I went to my first hockey game!" photo of the ice with the back of Mikey's head in the foreground showing his point of view, a hot air balloon (smaller version) inside the arena, the Zamboni on the ice, the guys smiling in their seats with mikey holding his box of nerds.
I definitely snuck those nerds into the arena in my winter coat…a mom’s gotta do what a mom’s gotta do.

From the expression on his face, we should have known that it would be a favorite for life…he’s grinning like a cheshire cat!

The Zamboni

For those new to hockey, between each period of play, a huge truck comes out to spray hot water on the ice and smooth it over before the players retake the ice. This giant ice re-surfacer is called a Zamboni (after its inventor, Frank Zamboni). It is one of Mikey’s favorite parts of the experience! I find this hilarious because hockey is fast-paced and thrilling and the Zamboni is slow and boring, but it does follow the same path around the ice each time. Maybe Mikey just appreciates its predictability.

In truth, Mikey appreciates all aspects of watching hockey live, maybe especially the vehicles and the snacks. Wink.
