Middle School Band

Mikey watching the concert in the middle school gym. All faces obscured with musical themed stickers except for Will walking in with his saxophone.
Music, as usual, but also exposure to Mikey's future school.

I’ve linked two posts below about attending Will’s Middle School Band concerts.  But this semester, these trips took on a new meaning. We started to talk to Mikey about this school becoming his school in the summer. Extended School Year (summer school to us old folks) was the actual move from elementary to middle school. The quieter environment allowed the special kiddos to get comfortable in the environment before the full school year began in September.

journal entry from Jan 19, 2015. 'Over the long weekend, I went to Will's band concert.' Mikey happily watching the band, holding his water bottle. The photos of the band are obscured with a big band sticker, piano keys and a swirl of musical notes surrounding Will carrying in his saxophone.
Two objectives, one trip to the middle school gym: support Will and expose Mikey to his future school.

I’m not sure how much of this Mikey understood, but I am always a fan of erring on the side of assuming competence and comprehension.  I keep talking to Mikey about things in the future, even if I’m not sure how much of it he can take in.  I am sure having Will there provided a great sense of comfort for him, so he never really struggled with transition from school to school. Still, I always explained and these Middle School Band concerts allowed us a great opportunity to experience Mikey’s future school in small doses.
