Make Your Bed

Did you know that September 11 is National Make Your Bed Day? Admiral William H. McRaven has a fabulous book of advice, based off a commencement speech he gave. The book is entitled MAKE YOUR BED, but the subtitle is what really caught my eye: “LITTLE THINGS THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE…AND MAYBE THE WORLD.”
The idea of the book is that by utilizing routine and discipline, we can accomplish a great deal. This idea is perfectly applicable to our role as special needs parents. Let’s empower our kids with as many of these simple skills as possible to make their lives full and fulfilling.

Start by showing them how to make the bed and move towards doing it as a team. Then slowly fade your involvement until your child can do it on their own. So many of our kids can master this skill if we give them a chance.
