Library Book

Library cartoons. Piles of books, a bookworm reading, a monkey reading.
Read and read and read, kids!

Around this time of year, lots of elementary school classrooms celebrate the 100th Day of School. Kids bring in examples of the number 100, like 100 paper clips, 100 pennies, or 100 rubber bands. Michael chose a book from the special cart the librarians put out for the occasion. Those little carts with a smaller selection of books often attracted Mikey – less overwhelming than the big shelves packed with books end to end.

A book about a fun school celebration is entertainment and a curriculum tie-in.

It was also a perfect tie-in with the curriculum. Keeping in touch with your child’s teacher about what is going on at school can help you guide your child to choose books that reinforce the school curriculum.

However

I am a huge fan of letting kids pick whichever book they want. My thinking is that for parents, the higher purpose is to foster a love of reading. We want our kids to love reading! They should get excited if they get to go to the library and pick out a book. It should be a treat! We want this to be a lifelong pursuit. Silly books like Captain Underpants? Fine by me. Graphic novels? Go for it! Books on tape that allow you to follow along as someone else reads aloud? Awesome.

There is no way to get better at reading, except to read. We want our kids to read as much as possible, as often as possible. Have fun, kids!!
