Kids’ Magazines

National Geographic logo, a cartoon of the earth and a photo of the cover of the magazine Nat Geo Kids with penguins on the cover and Mikey looking through the magazine
Mikey mostly liked the pictures, but sometimes Will, Dave or I would read him the articles.

Many of you may be familiar with Highlights, a magazine for kids with stories, puzzles and hidden pictures.  It has been around since many of us were little. I’m so glad Mikey wrote about this in December because these are wonderful ideas for holiday gifts for kids.  It is great fun to find a magazine in the mail with your name on it, especially for you.

Mikey's journal entry from December 9, 2014. 'I get this magazine every month in the mail. It's great! 2 photos of Mikey looking at it and a photo of the cover.
If your child brings their journal to school, send the magazine too so the other kids can see it…more to chat about.

Mikey loved animals, so Nat Geo Kids was a great choice for him.

Here are some other magazines geared towards kids. Check for the appropriate ages and then make your best guess about what might be right for your special kiddo.

  1. Highlights Magazine for Kids (general, some stories, some puzzles, etc…)
  2. National Geographic for Kids (focuses on animals, photos are amazing)
  3. Time for Kids (if you want a way to talk to your child about current events)
  4. Cricket Media (has a variety – we loved Ladybug, which features creative writing)
  5. Ranger Rick (nature magazine, environmental issues and ideas)

If your child is interested in any of these topics or if you want to encourage your child to read more, a subscription to one of these magazines might be a great idea for a holiday gift.
