Happy Earth Day!

2 stylized photos of Mikey, one on the swing set in our backyard and one on the slide, wearing his athletic pants, sneakers and army hoodie and holding his reusable water bottle.

When the kids were little, we used to celebrate Earth Day with a craft or an activity until I realized these were probably not the most Earth-friendly ways to celebrate.  Then, I shifted to celebrating Earth Day by enjoying our little slice of the Earth.  We’d go outside and appreciate the nature around us without leaving anything behind.

journal entry for Earth Day, April 22: "I played outside on the swings and slide. I sat and listened to my wind chimes too!
Of course, Mikey is using his reusable water bottle on Earth Day, and every day.

Community Service

The boys were also part of the Cub Scouts which organized an Earth Day event in our town each year called Mount Trashmore.  It usually took place on the weekend before or after the official day. The scout troops would spread out around town and collect trash. Then, they would bring it all back to the green in front of town hall and we would get to see all the trash that had accumulated around our town during the year.  Since we take a lot of pride in being a small town that respects our trails and open spaces, it always shocked the kids to see how much litter could be found around town.

In total, we honored Earth Day by appreciating our natural spaces, cleaning up our town and learning about how much litter can accumulate even when citizens care for their environment. Loving, Helping and Learning!
