Frog!

Frog Frolic is our town library’s annual country fair-style fundraiser. These 3-D printed frogs were placed around town the week beforehand to generate excitement around the event for the kids.

Mikey likely included it in his journal because he was excited to find one, but…
Including this in his journal let his pals know that he was heading to Frog Frolic that weekend. They could look for him when they got there or ask their moms to call me and see if they could tag along with our family. The journal was helping Mikey to do what other kids could do verbally, make plans for the weekend.
Anticipate Questions
I thought about natural questions that might come up. For example, “Where did you find it?” Then, I added a caption to answer that question. It is something that would be hard for Mikey to answer spontaneously, so it made sense for me to put it in his journal for him.

Erica Mauro is a mom to two teenage boys, Will who is neurotypical and Michael with Autism and cognitive delays. She holds a BA in Psychology from Colgate University and a Masters of Psychology in Education from Columbia Teacher’s College. Before staying home with her children, she worked as an elementary school teacher. For five years, she served on the Board of Directors of the Molly Ann Tango Memorial Foundation, a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of children with special needs.
