Folding Laundry

stylized close-up of mikey folding his shirts using his laundry board.

On this Flash Forward Friday, we share a trick we use for folding shirts.  We bought an inexpensive plastic laundry folding board on amazon.

Mikey wearing his FREE RANGE HUMAN sweatshirt, standing at the table, folding a tee shirt with a pile of tee shirts already folded to his left.

Mikey lays his shirts face down in the middle of the board (although it doesn’t really matter which way). He closes one side flap, folding one arm of the shirt in. He closes the other flap, folding the other arm of the shirt in. Finally, he folds up the bottom flap which folds the shirt in half.  It is actually very easy, but you could number the flaps for your child if they need some extra prompting.

The beauty of these folding boards is that the closet or drawers stay very neat because everything is folded neatly in the same shape.

Note

I have also seen YouTube videos in which families use a part of a cardboard box. If you google “DIY Laundry Folding Board,” it should return some good results with instructions.

Keeping it Simple

To keep things as easy as possible, Michael folds his pants in half once and in half again and they lay flat on the shelf.  He does the same with washcloths, hand towels and his boxer briefs.  He has only one type of sock so there is no sorting, and he pairs them up and folds them in half.  He has a bin for socks and a bin for underwear. He is still doing all of this with a lot of help, but he’s working on it.
