First Holy Communion
The first thing that strikes me about this journal entry is Will standing proudly behind his brother. That’s how it has always been. Will looks out for Michael and cares for him in a truly heartwarming way.
Then I think how priceless it is to have gotten a photo of him with his buddies, just the guys, on their way over to the church for their big moment.
If I could give one gift to the readers of this blog, it would be the knowledge that your life and the lives of your children will touch so many other people along the way.
With them, you will share smiles and hugs and so much laughter. Your child will help someone learn about people with special needs and in return, your child will learn about all different kinds of people. Your kiddo will leave their mark and make the world a better place. They will be important.
They already are important. God made them perfectly and they are shining their light. Some days are extremely hard work and others, we just get to stand in their glow.

Erica Mauro is a mom to two teenage boys, Will who is neurotypical and Michael with Autism and cognitive delays. She holds a BA in Psychology from Colgate University and a Masters of Psychology in Education from Columbia Teacher’s College. Before staying home with her children, she worked as an elementary school teacher. For five years, she served on the Board of Directors of the Molly Ann Tango Memorial Foundation, a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of children with special needs. In partnership with her husband Dave, she aspires to parent by using daily life as an opportunity for therapeutic intervention, seizing on real experiences as opportunities to build skills and strategies for Michael in a joyful, loving home environment. On the tougher early days, she just tried to get everyone safely to bedtime and start fresh in the morning. *wink*
