Eric Carle

Stylized photo of Mikey reading his book with a cartoon of the very hungry caterpillar on the side as well as Eric Carle's name.
Eric Carle, most famous for his book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has many wonderful books.

Over the years, Mikey has read many books by Eric Carle. His absolute favorite is a book called The Very Quiet Cricket. The story is about a cricket who wants to be able to rub his wings together to make his signature sound to communicate with other insects. Throughout the book, the quiet cricket meets different insects who make unique sounds. He even meets a Luna moth who makes no sound, and the cricket enjoys the stillness.

When you turn to the last page, the cricket has met another quiet cricket and finally, he is able to makes his sound.

Mikey connected with the character of the very quiet cricket and celebrated his success with every read.

Sometimes people underestimate the way children (and adults) with disabilities understand their world. But Mikey chose a book about a character who struggled with communication, his biggest challenge. He returned to The Quiet Cricket over and over. Each time we read it, the last page brought a smile to his face. He loved that book! Mikey gets it.

Animal Sound Book

In this journal entry, Michael shares another Eric Carle book he loved. These sound books are next level. There are buttons to push for every page to make the animal sound that corresponds with Eric Carle’s beautiful art. Mikey could read them by himself and he loved listening to all the funny sounds.

Mikey is right! This book is filled with beautiful colors and funny sounds.

One Cool Thing

Here is a link to a video of Mr. Rogers interviewing Eric Carle about how he creates the art for his books. Very cool!

How cool is this? Kids could definitely make Eric Carle art!

This is so fun; it could even inspire me to be crafty. Wink!
