Elderly Pets
Because the blog shares Mikey’s Journal from one decade ago, I can share that Max lived almost another whole year after this journal entry. He passed away on July 1, 2017.
Mikey was worried about him and stayed by his side at the vet’s office. The scarier or more troubling parts of life are learning experiences, sometimes even more than the happy times.
As pets age, kids get a glimpse into the process of slowing down. An older dog may offer less opportunities for running and roughhousing, but they make up for it with cuddles and sweet kisses. That allows the kids to step up and care for their dog, providing love, companionship and lots of pets!
Life is enrichment! Live each day to the fullest and care for the people (and animals) around you. You won’t regret it!

Erica Mauro is a mom to two teenage boys, Will who is neurotypical and Michael with Autism and cognitive delays. She holds a BA in Psychology from Colgate University and a Masters of Psychology in Education from Columbia Teacher’s College. Before staying home with her children, she worked as an elementary school teacher. For five years, she served on the Board of Directors of the Molly Ann Tango Memorial Foundation, a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of children with special needs. In partnership with her husband Dave, she aspires to parent by using daily life as an opportunity for therapeutic intervention, seizing on real experiences as opportunities to build skills and strategies for Michael in a joyful, loving home environment. On the tougher early days, she just tried to get everyone safely to bedtime and start fresh in the morning. *wink*
