Another fun day at the movies for Mikey and our family delivers a larger message and reminds us of the importance of dads.
For those of you who need a refresher, at this point in the series, Gru has adopted Margo, Agnes and Edith. He’s a single dad who turned his life around for his girls, despite facing daily challenges. When a former rival supervillain comes to him to recruit him back into a life of crime, Gru says,
“I’m a father now, with responsibilities, and a legitimate businessman. I’m developing a delicious line of jams and jellies.”
The moms of kids with special needs get a lot of recognition. But I want to take a minute to give a shout out to the dads. We need them with us and we appreciate them!
The weight of the responsibility dads feel is incredibly heavy and just like us moms, they need to choose to show up for their children and families every day.
Don’t forget about the dads. Dads are the best!

Erica Mauro is a mom to two teenage boys, Will who is neurotypical and Michael with Autism and cognitive delays. She holds a BA in Psychology from Colgate University and a Masters of Psychology in Education from Columbia Teacher’s College. Before staying home with her children, she worked as an elementary school teacher. For five years, she served on the Board of Directors of the Molly Ann Tango Memorial Foundation, a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of children with special needs. In partnership with her husband Dave, she aspires to parent by using daily life as an opportunity for therapeutic intervention, seizing on real experiences as opportunities to build skills and strategies for Michael in a joyful, loving home environment.
