Deep Pressure

Today’s journal entry reminded me that it might be a good idea to go into more depth about the benefits of deep pressure. By way of introduction, here’s a post that covers ways to meet your child’s sensory needs daily.
Squeezes
Michael loves giant, dramatic, almost bone-crushing squeezes!

This is no coincidence! Lots of kids with autism love sensory input in the form of deep pressure.
Benefits
The benefits of deep pressure for kids on the spectrum include:
- Calming their nervous system
- Reducing sensory overload
- Improving their focus and attention
- Supporting emotional regulation
- Enhancing body awareness
- Improving sleep
Methods
Mikey likes squeezes, but your child might prefer massage, a weighted blanket or a compression vest. Do some experimenting and consult with your child’s physical or occupational therapist…and, as always, listen to your child and do what they prefer.
