Cub Scouts

Field Trip to the Military Museum with the Scouts

Cub Scouts was so great for Mikey! The den meetings were small enough that Mikey could participate. The activities were life skills focused, but always fun and engaging. The pack meetings were big and festive and often gave us the opportunity to participate in community service.  They boys were the kindest and the most inclusive and the parents were warm and welcoming.

Journal entry from 10/5. I had a Cub Scout Den Meeting. Mikey smiling in his uniform.
Cooperation and socialization and life skills…what could be better?

Even if the cub scouts are not as perfect of a fit for your child, it makes sense to structure in some social time when the kids are young.  If your child’s needs (special or not) include a need to work on social skills, pick something that has a draw for them and also includes other kids.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter if this is a coding class, an after-school art program or a sports team.  Get them into something where they can find their tribe. There are groups that focus on almost everything now and if you don’t find something great, maybe you can work with some other parents to create a social group.

Get Connected, Then Reset

If these situations are a challenge for your child, build in some recovery time afterwards so they can (to quote Vince Vaughn’s character in Wedding Crashers) “recharge [the] batteries, shut down the engines, and get [themselves] back to neutral.”
