CT Science Center
The Connecticut Science Center is a little over an hour away from us by car. Visiting museums like this over the summer is a great idea for a few reasons. First, it’s not a weather dependent activity. You can do it rain or shine. Second, it is great fun but also educational. Finally, it can spark your kids’ interests in a particular topic which can lead to more exploration, expanded library trips focusing on the nonfiction section and summer learning. Who knows, you might even be inspired to do a science experiment at home.
You can tell from this journal entry, it was a day jam-packed with fun and learning. There are science museums and natural history museums across the country. Children’s museums, zoos, aquariums, local historical sites and art museums are all great options depending on your child’s interests and abilities.
Get out there and summer like you mean it!

Erica Mauro is a mom to two teenage boys, Will who is neurotypical and Michael with Autism and cognitive delays. She holds a BA in Psychology from Colgate University and a Masters of Psychology in Education from Columbia Teacher’s College. Before staying home with her children, she worked as an elementary school teacher. For five years, she served on the Board of Directors of the Molly Ann Tango Memorial Foundation, a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of children with special needs. In partnership with her husband Dave, she aspires to parent by using daily life as an opportunity for therapeutic intervention, seizing on real experiences as opportunities to build skills and strategies for Michael in a joyful, loving home environment. On the tougher early days, she just tried to get everyone safely to bedtime and start fresh in the morning. *wink*
