Be a Kind Soul

I saw a facebook post recently that said, “Children with autism are very observant so they will notice everything, including your attitude towards them.” I tried to go back and find it, but I couldn’t.  I think this idea is the core of our mission as parents, family members and friends to people with special needs, so I re-created it with Michael’s art in the background. I made a small change to the quote because I deeply believe this is true of all children. Regardless of their level of need, all of our kids deserve our respect and our kindness.

Despite the pressure we feel to ‘make progress’, the most important thing we can do for our children is to interact with them in a loving, caring way. We’re modeling how they will interact with the world. So, what I’m saying is, even if you are totally Type A…remind yourself that you’re doing important work by slowing down and modeling calm.  Be a fun, caring person towards them, so they can learn to be a kind soul when they interact with others.

I hope this Saturday Suggestion takes a little bit of pressure away and reminds you that you’re doing a wonderful thing, just by being a kind, caring person.  Your kids are watching and you’re being a great role model.
